What is the difference between the redline mode and textual comparison?
The redline mode is accessed with the "A" button located in the top-middle tool bar. It toggles between clean and redline mode, and the purpose of the redlining is to show deviances from the form template that's been set with all default values.
The textual comparison is a type of comparing different versions of a document, or to compare a DOCX vs. project document(s). It is accessed in the right panel under the versioning tab.
In summary, the redline mode shows deviances from the original form document (starting point) in real time whereas textual comparison shows differences between the versions or a completely new document (and it takes a few seconds to produce the result).
I can conditionally include text area with default text, which I would be able to freestyle edit as necessary. Why would I need to use Freestyle Edit feature?
Although it is true that you can set a text area with default text, and condition that text area appropriately and have the user edit it easily, you cannot have variables within the contents of text area, and the redline mode will not show changes made to the text area. And as author, you will need to make edits to default text assigned to Term Templates, rather than editing them in Provision Templates. However, in cases where those factors are not important, it is a valid and useful templatizing method.
I would like feature X. How do I get it?
